This list seems heavily weighted in favor of books that became movie adaptations. For example, Captain Corelli's Mandolin is a fine book, but you can't appreciate Louis De Bernieres until you read the trilogy that starts with the War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts.

not only the title, but a succinct description of the plot.

This book is one of those novels that I was really disappointed when I finished it because I loved the characters so much. Imagine my joy to discover he'd written two more with many of the same people!

it would have been cool if the plot had been about growing turnips and had featured the complete absence of any character named Don Emmanuel.

still a good title though.
