good stuff that kids do...
Jan. 4th, 2005 10:00 pmSo a novel I took out of the library today and an album I got for Christmas got me thinking about an idea.
The novel and the album really only have two things in common, both are interesting (I really like the album, have just started the book) and both were created by kids about the same age as the students I teach.
I realized that when I was their age I was always excited to know that there were kids out there about my age who were doing *something*, because adults were always talking about what I could do "when I grew up" and I felt kind of proud knowing that someone out there hadn't waited.
So maybe it's a dumb idea, but I was thinking about setting aside some time during this class I have a couple of days a week that is called "advisory" to share some of the stuff I've found that kids have created or done, see if the kids have ideas of stuff we could look at or listen to. I'm hoping to find some stuff besides movie stars and rappers, though I'm willing to entertain that possibility. I have some novels and an album, the girl who started "Kids for Kerry" is only 12, and she got to speak at the convention, and, though I'm not sure I'm prepared to get into talking about the 12-year old revolutionary leaders in one of the southeast asian countries, I am interested in finding some stuff that's off the beaten path a bit.
maybe this is done to death in magazines and stuff, maybe they'd hate it, but it seems like maybe it would be something they could connect to a little more that my droning about "appropriate ways of dealing with bullies"
other than that, unfortunately 2005 seems to be starting with an arthritis flare-up, and that means I've already been typing too much today.
would really love ideas and feedback if anyone has any.
